Job hunting on a visit visa in the UAE is legal. You can look for jobs, send your CV and attend interviews. What you cannot do is start working before your employer gets you a work permit. Even one day of work without a permit breaks UAE law.
Which visit visa should I use to look for a job?
Most people come on a normal tourist or family visit visa. That is fine for meeting companies and attending walk-in interviews. But there is also a special visa made for this purpose.
GDRFA Dubai lists a service called “visit visa to explore job opportunities”. According to the GDRFA page (checked October 2026):
- It comes in 60, 90 or 120 days.
- You do not need a host or sponsor inside the UAE.
- It is for skilled workers at the first, second or third professional level in MOHRE’s job classification, or graduates of one of the world’s top 500 universities. The minimum education listed is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Documents: a photo, a passport copy valid for at least 6 months, and your university degree.
| Duration | Visa fee (GDRFA Dubai) |
|---|---|
| 60 days | AED 200 + 5% VAT |
| 90 days | AED 300 + 5% VAT |
| 120 days | AED 400 + 5% VAT |
The page also lists a refundable financial guarantee of AED 1,000 plus small service fees, and says the total may vary. Apply only through the official GDRFA website or app, or an Amer centre.
If you are a blue-collar worker without a degree, this special visa is probably not for you. A normal visit visa still lets you search for jobs. The work rules below are the same for both.
Job hunting on a visit visa: can I also work?
No. The UAE labour law, Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, says in Article 6(1) that it is not permissible to undertake work in the UAE, and the employer may not recruit or employ any worker, “except after obtaining a work permit from the Ministry”.
So these are not allowed on a visit visa:
- A “trial week” where you do real work before your papers are ready
- Part-time shifts, delivery jobs or driving “until the visa comes”
- Helping in a friend’s shop for cash
The law punishes the employer with heavy fines. But you carry risk too: you have no contract, no protection if salary is not paid, and you can face deportation. Read more in our guide on working without a work permit in the UAE.
I got a job offer. How does my visa change?
The employer does the paperwork, not you. The usual order is:
- You sign the offer letter. Read it carefully first – see how to read a UAE job offer letter.
- The employer applies to MOHRE for your work permit.
- The employer applies for your entry permit for employment.
- If you are already in the UAE, your status can be changed from visitor to resident without leaving the country. In Dubai, GDRFA calls this “Status Amendment” and its page lists the main fee as AED 500. If this is not possible in your case, you may need to exit and re-enter on the new entry permit.
- After that comes medical test, Emirates ID and your residence visa. Our first 30 days guide explains each step.
If the company says “start now, we will do the visa later”, ask them politely to finish the permit first.
Indian passport holders: if your passport is ECR, you may need emigration clearance on eMigrate for a job. Check our ECR and eMigrate guide.
What if my visit visa ends before I find a job?
Leave on time, or extend the visa before it expires through the official channel. Staying after the expiry date means overstay fines for every extra day, and it can create problems on future visits. Fine amounts have changed in the past, so check your exact status and any fine on the ICP or GDRFA Dubai app or website. Do not trust a number from social media.
Plan your search before you fly. Prepare your CV and check walk-in interviews happening during your visit.
Which scams target people on visit visas?
People on short visas are under pressure, and scammers know it. Watch for these:
- “Pay for your employment visa.” The labour law says the employer must not charge the worker recruitment and employment fees. A real company does not ask you for visa money.
- “Visa change” fees to an agent you met on WhatsApp or Facebook, with no company name on any document.
- “Work now, visa later.” You work weeks without pay, then the “employer” disappears.
- “Give us your passport.” The law says employers must not withhold a worker’s official documents. Give a copy, not the original.

Quick answers
Can I attend interviews on a tourist visa?
Yes. Searching and interviewing is fine. Working before a work permit is not.
Can I do an unpaid trial on a visit visa?
It is risky. If you are doing real work, you need a work permit first. Ask the company to process the permit before you start.
Who pays for my work visa?
The employer. The UAE labour law bans charging workers recruitment and employment fees.
Do I need to leave the UAE to change to a work visa?
Often no – status can be changed inside the country. Your employer and GDRFA/ICP will confirm what applies to you.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules and fees change – check with MOHRE, ICP or GDRFA for your own case.
